The count is zero, or looks wrong

Tally reads from Apple Health. If Health has no steps for today, Tally shows none — it has nothing else to draw from.

Check that access is granted: Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › Tally Steps, and turn on steps, distance and active energy. Tally's own Settings screen shows what it can currently see.

Worth knowing: a read-only app is never told whether you granted or denied permission. That is Apple's design, not an oversight. So if you deny access, Tally cannot say "you denied this" — it can only show zero. If the number looks wrong, permissions are the first thing to check.

The number is different from the Fitness app

Both read the same Health data, but Fitness counts an Apple Watch's steps and an iPhone's separately, while Health merges them and removes overlap. Tally shows the merged figure, so it can be lower than a per-device count.

A widget or complication is stale

Widgets are refreshed by iOS on its own schedule, not on demand — the system budgets how often any app may redraw. Opening Tally updates them immediately.

If a complication is blank, remove it from the watch face and add it again. That forces a fresh timeline.

Adding a complication

Press and hold the watch face, tap Edit, swipe to Complications, tap a slot and choose Tally. Corner slots exist on Infograph; the rectangular slot is on Modular.

Changing the goal

Drag the slider in Settings, or tap the number to type an exact one. Goals above the slider's range can only be typed — the slider goes inert rather than silently clamping what you entered.

Switching light and dark

Tally follows your phone by default. Settings has an explicit choice, and a long press on the Today ring flips it too.

Widgets always follow the system appearance. iOS gives no way for an app to pass its own preference to them, so a widget may be light while the app is dark.

Tips and refunds

Tips are optional and unlock nothing. They are handled by Apple, so refunds go through Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue them ourselves.

Deleting your data

Tally stores nothing off your device. Deleting the app removes its cached copy of your totals. Your Health data belongs to Health and is untouched by either action.
